What size of table for 4, 6 or 8 people?
The right table size comes from two simple measurements: the space each guest needs, and the clearance around the table once the chairs are pulled out.
The 60 cm rule
As a general rule, allow 60 cm of width per person along the table, and a table depth of 90 to 100 cm so plates can sit face to face without crowding. A seat at the end of the table needs the full width of the table itself.
Rectangular and oval tables
| Guests | Recommended length | At NEVA |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 120 to 140 cm | better a round table (see below) |
| 6 | 160 to 180 cm | 180 × 90 cm |
| 6 à 8 | 200 cm | 200 × 100 cm |
| 8 | 220 cm | 220 × 100 or 220 × 110 cm |
| 8 à 10 | 240 cm | 240 × 100 or 240 × 120 cm |
An oval table seats slightly more people than a rectangular one of the same length: no corners, so it is easier to squeeze in.
Round tables
| Diameter | Guests |
|---|---|
| Ø 100 cm | 4 |
| Ø 110 to 120 cm | 4 à 6 |
| Ø 140 cm | 6 |
A round table encourages conversation and fits well in a square room or a dining nook. Beyond 6 people, an oval is more practical.
The space around it
Allow 75 to 90 cm between the edge of the table and the nearest wall or piece of furniture, so you can pull back a chair and walk behind it. In a narrow room, a table 90 cm deep leaves more room to pass than a table 110 cm deep.
Tip: mark the outline of the table on the floor with masking tape, and place your chairs around it for a day or two.
