Natural, semi-filled or filled travertine: which finish to choose?
The pores are part of travertine’s charm. The finish decides how much of them you keep: all, some, or none on the surface.
The three finishes
| Finish | Look | Care |
|---|---|---|
| Natural (open pores) | the most raw: the holes in the stone remain visible | crumbs and liquids can settle in the pores: a little more care |
| Semi-filled | the larger holes are filled, the fine pores remain visible | the compromise between character and ease |
| Fully filled | smooth, sealed surface; the pores remain visible beneath the finish | the easiest to clean |
Which one for which piece?
- Dining table : the fully filled finish is the most practical day to day. It is the one we recommend.
- Coffee table : the semi-filled finish keeps its character without being demanding.
- Console : rarely exposed, it suits the natural finish well, the most authentic one.
How filling is done
The pores are filled with a putty tinted to match the stone, then the surface is sanded flat. Filling does not stop the stone from developing a patina over the years: that is normal, and part of its beauty.
